A Little on Tarot, A Lot on Oracle

Tarot cards have a long history dating back to the 15th century in Europe and are associated with various mystical traditions. The decks usually consist of 78 cards divided into two main sections, the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Tarot contains rich imagery with specific symbols and archetypes, and each card has traditional meanings associated with it. Readings done with tarot often involve structured spreads or layouts, with each card’s position representing a specific aspect of the question or situation. I should say that this is very basic information, and I can’t elaborate because I haven’t formally trained in reading Tarot.

Oracle cards have a more recent origin and draw from a broader range of cultural and spiritual influences. They may incorporate elements from different belief systems or be entirely unique to their creator’s vision. Oracle decks vary widely in terms of structure and number of cards and the cards may not follow a standardized format like tarot decks. Some are designed specifically for certain purposes, such as relationship guidance, healing, or personal growth.

One of the primary goals of oracle card readings is to empower and inspire individuals on their spiritual journey. They can offer encouragement, validation, and fresh perspectives, helping individuals gain clarity, overcome challenges, and align with their highest potential. By tapping into the wisdom of the cards and their own intuition, practitioners can cultivate a deeper connection with themselves and their spirituality.

Oracle card readings may be more flexible, with the reader intuitively selecting cards based on the energy of the moment or the client’s needs. Although modern tarot will allow room for this as well, there still may be less emphasis on predetermined layouts and concrete interpretations.

Oracle readings seem to rely more heavily on the intuitive abilities of the reader. Some decks come with guidebooks which have interpretations for each card, but the reader is encouraged to tap into their intuition and personal connection with the cards to derive meaning and guidance, which may completely override the given interpretation.

Once the cards are drawn, the reader determines their meaning based on the context of the situation before them. Oracle readings often emphasize reflection and encourage individuals to trust their inner wisdom and take positive action in their lives. Oracle readings can be adapted to a variety of purposes, including self-reflection, spiritual guidance, meditation, journaling, etc.
